// Añada 2018 > 99 > It's always a very exciting moment when tasting a new vintage of what has quickly become one of the icons from Rioja. The 2018 Las Beatas comes from a very wet year that saw a late harvest, starting October 8 and finishing on November 1, and these grapes were picked in mid-October to deliver a more aromatic and cool expression of the place. The field blend of grapes fermented in a 3,000-liter open-top oak vat with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in a 1,200-liter oak foudre for 14 to 16 months. This is not as powerful and concentrated as the 2015, but it's more elegant and fluid, with great purity and inner strength. The grapes ripened very slowly, and the wine developed great complexity and nuance. It feels young and undeveloped, a little closed at first, in need of some more time to develop further complexity in bottle. It's tender and young, easy to drink, approachable and round, but with all the ingredients to develop nicely in bottle.1,528 bottles were filled in May 2020.
// Añada 2017 > 98+ > Tasting a new vintage of Las Beatas is always a special moment. The 2017 Las Beatas comes from grapes picked earlier than ever, from a year that was warm and dry, marked by frost in late April and low-yielding. Despite which, the wine is still 14% alcohol and feels delicate, floral and mysterious. It fermented in an open 3,000-liter oak vat with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 1,200-liter oak foudre for 14 to 16 months. This is always a mysterious wine, completely different and changing—"tri-dimensional," as Telmo says—and I thought about an Agatha Christie novel. As with the Tabuerniga, Las Beatas transcends the conditions of the vintage; it's nuanced and insinuating, with subtle and very elegant aromas and a textured palate with a very fine, silky thread. A lovely and delicate expression of Rioja that is full of light and energy. There is a jump in quality from Tabuerniga here. 1,501 bottles were filled in May 2019.
// Añada 2016 > 99 puntos > I was really anxious to taste the 2016 Las Beatas after the other-worldly 2015, where the field blend of eight or nine grape varieties produced 1,532 bottles from the 1.9 hectares of vines. The wine matured in a 1,200-liter oak foudre in a very cold cellar that provides a very slow evolution of the wine. It's the most backward and reticent of all the Rioja wines here. It's elegant, subtle and delicate, shy and slow to open up in the glass. The palate reveals great balance and very fine chalky tannins, with great purity and depth, and it's -more insinuating than in-your-face, with energy and length. I kept the bottle and retasted it a few hours later, because I like to see how a wine like this evolves. It developed further nuance; it is a world class wine. A superb Beatas. I later tasted it blind next to the 2015, and I don't think it quite reached the same level of nuance and elegance.
