2020 > 96-97 puntos
The sample of the 2020 San Lázaro shows big bones and a slim structure, an ethereal wine that is long and floral. It's spicy and has freshness. In 2020, they used a little bit of white grapes, but there's more in 2021, when they decided to systematically use 2% to 4% of white grapes in the vineyards where the grapes are interplanted with the Tempranillo. It doesn't seem to have the same complexity and depth as the 2019 or 2018.
2019 > 97 puntos
The bottled 2019 San Lázaro delivered what the sample promised back in January. It comes from one of my favorite vineyards, a 1.62-hectare plot in Laguardia just below Bodegas Palacio, a vineyard planted in 1956 on limestone and sand soils that produce elegant wines. In the past, the vineyard used to contribute to the Pagos Viejos blend that has been bottled separately since 2016 and has quickly taken a leading position in the Artadi hierarchy. The wine is complex and nuanced, serious and insinuating, with fine aromas of herbs and flowers and a lively and balanced palate with ultra fine, abundant and chalky tannins. Superb! 2,000 bottles were filled in June 2021. (Issue 258 End of December 2021, The Wine Advocate)

The bottled 2018 San Lázaro delivered all the promise of the unbottled sample. It's aromatic, fresh and clean, with energy and depth. It comes from a plot of 1.62 hectares planted in 1956 on sand and limestone soils. All the vineyards are vinified the same way, after a one to two-day cold soak, the wine fermented in open-top oak vats with indigenous yeasts for 10-12 days, during which time the grapes are foot trodden, and they do a short pump-over. It matured in barrique for nine months. This is all about finesse and elegance—it's all in the right place, and it's seamless, balanced and harmonious. It's just plain great. A very attractive vintage of San Lázaro. This is clearly Grand Cru quality. 2,000 bottles were filled in June 2020.
